The care and feeding of adhesive nozzles | 23 May, 1999

Any suggestions on how to maintain Adhesive dispensing nozzles??? They seem to plug up over night and it is starting to get on my nerves. We have tried leaving the nozzles in the machine, removing them and soaking in alcohol, blowing them out with compressed air, and even sacrificing chickens to no avail. Is there a solution that will dissolve the adhesive (Loctite 3609 chipbonder).

Deon Response:

| Hello Mike, I would suggest removing the nozzles as you did at the end of your production and leaving your nozzles soaking in 50-50 solution of MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) and Alcohol. Use a sealed glass jar to keep these in. Also make sure your nozzles do not have any plastic or soft rubber parts. This solution is very aggresive and will disolve any soft materials including that sticky adhesive. Try this, see if it helps.

READ THE MSDS on MEK before you do anything.......NASTY stuff. I used to use it before the MSDS stuff was popular; this stuff will turn potting compound into jello. If memory serves me, it's a carcinogen, to boot. You do NOT want to bring the material into your facility if you don't have it already.....the waste stream nightmare begins.....

Why don't you get a list of the solvents / cleaning solutions you currently have resident in your waste stream, and run it by Loctite for the application?

I went to Loctite Web site and found 7603 (I think that the number) Solvent for adhesive. I Will give that a go, thanks for the tip on the bad stuff...

Mike,

I do not know what type of machine you have, but we use a valve purge compound on our dispensing machines. We also use Loctite 3609. You can buy it in various size syringes. Just place the compound syringe on your pump head and purge all of the epoxy out of your nozzles or needles. The stuff will not solidify or dry up. When you are ready to run again just place your epoxy syringe on and purge out the compound. Have been using this stuff for 5+ years without any problems. Just make sure you purge out all material before and after building product

Robert,

We have a Camalot 1818, and a Gemini machine. We use the purge compound in both of them.
