quoting smt

I am interested in seeing how some of you quote smt work. Currently we quote off a bom without component packages known then look in data books to find out what type of component they are. This job will be mine soon but i really believe there is a better way. From what i understand they use the total number of leads on a pcb as the main factor regardless of the type of component. Any feedback is appreciated.

Wayne,

Build an in-house component part numbering system database. Then, do a search off the customer's boms first for a match in your inventories. ASSUME (and put it in your quote) that you have lattitude on passives, and some generic actives (i.e. 74ls, als series....etc.) This drives the quote turnaround time down.

You cannot expect to be competitive if you hit the streets for every quote.

FYI....to compete with the big boys, you need to be at 5 - 10 cents per placement.

Wayne,

We also quote off B.O.M, many potential customers will use an actual vendor part #. After a few quotes you should be able to recognize the size/packages of parts by these numbers. However other considerations should be looked at:

1. Capabilites of placement machine? Can you do 0402's or BGA's

2. Number of Feeders you can fit on machine? Do you have to purchase new feeders

3. Is PCB single or double-sided?

4. If double-sided can I glue then wave solder? or Double reflow or Simultaneous reflow

5. Is fine pitch IC's on board?

6. Do my stencils need laser or Chem-etch?

7. Do my apertures need to be reduced?

8. Can I use intrusive reflow on any thru hole?

I sure that other netters can add on some more. I would stress that you should know your automation capabilities very well. Read the advice that these guys on SMTnet have even if not in your are of expertise, there is always a chance that your boss or someone will ask "What if we .....!"

The accuracy of your quote model is a function of: * Process capability * Detailed understanding of the requirements for assembly * Understanding of customer requirements

You need to create models for through hole, smt auto place hand-add, cable harness, testing, cleaning, specials etc. Evaluate each process and determin cost of opperation for direct labor and indirect labor. Re-evaluate each quote for performance. What went well / what did not go so well. Adjust accordingly for the next quote. Determin scrap factors. Re-evaluate your costing models based on new technologies and processes. This is very important. I have seen new equipment added to shops but use quote models 5 years old! Once you determin cos per placement (by comp. type), you can then break it down to cost / placement / interconnect. Wheather your quoting sub-cent placement to 25 cent per placement remember, The more accurate your models, the better you can service your customers and yourself.
