dispensing paste for rework | 9 July, 1999

Has anybody successfully used an automated dispensing system to put solder paste dots on .5 mm pitch pads?? I need to replace some Meritec tsop sockets and I don't want to use the single site stencils for .5 mm parts.

Don't blame you for not wanting to use single site stuff for .5 mm parts. We draw the line at .8 mm for uBGA's.

I did put together a kluge system consisting of a needle dispenser adapted to a rigid stand. I created a table movable on X-Y axes and a micrometer stop system. It works pretty well but not nearly automatic. I'd like to know from you, as you continue investigating, who's making auto systems/tools for this application, how well they work, and associated costs.

Thanks,

Earl,

Srt makes a system called the summit 2100D. Its a relatively new product but it is designed for rework applications. The programming is simple and interfaces well with other srt products. As with any dispensing system, you have to clean the pump everyday, if you don't, you pay big bucks to replace the Techon pump.

Carol, Quick tips on dispensing. 1.5 x Needle ID is the smallest dot you can make. 23g tip .013 ID is the smallest practical tip yuo can use w/ TypeIII powder. Sounds like Erik got burned on not running a valve purge compound thru the pump head at the end of the day. Using that product will minimize the need to break the pump down daily. Weekly will do. RSVP if you need more help. Tim |
