handling components for rework

We only do rework with SMT components or a small amount of SMT work. We are having a hard time keeping the components safe throughout the handling process of removing one or two components, and issuing them to an operator for processing or inspection. I am looking for some carriers that would hold different sizes of components, or else a good method of "chopping up" existing carriers to meet our needs. Any ideas of safe handling of SMT components would be helpful.

Depends on the type of component. For SOIC type components we used to use leftover full length tubes or the small conductive cardboard boxes (Brick container and others) that gently squeezed the component between two pieces of conductve foam. We now maintain these parts in a line stock situation that is adjacent to the rework area.. For fine pitch (like QFP) we issue only sealed factory packages. The rework area is equipped to handle and package these components safely. After using the required components, the operator repackages the tray and returns it to stock. Full ESD and moisture controls are in place at all times. This has eliminated virtually all handling damage for us. John Thorup
