| CAN ANYBODY ADVISE ME AS TO INDIVIDUAL PCB IDENTIFICATION THROUGH ASSEMBLY - THE PROS AND CONS | | THANKS | Leo: I have been doing a bit of research on this topic recently. I would be glad to discuss it with you.

It seems the best technology is directly marking the boards using datamatrix technology and either lasers or inkjet printers. In recent weeks, visiting a number of contract manufacturing houses to discuss this, I have found a wide variety of justifications and applications. One organization uses individual serialization of all boards on each panel to error-proof manufacturing and verify product prior to burning in an IP address (Industrial controls manufacturer). Another produces mixed product on lines and verifies board identity correlates with programs on placement systems. Another tracks all warranty / rework/ life cycle information and provides process insight. Send me an e-mail address and I'll forward some more info. -John O'Brien
