Serious stuff | 18 August, 1999

OK folks, let's get real serious.

Well, I shot off my big mouth yesterday during a scheduling meeting concerning DFM and rework. Again, what an irony, oxymoron, or that other thing.

Anyway, I said it would take another 4 weeks to develop a process to remove the littl Micropax muthas, or not. They didn't catch the "or not" as it very well mightn't be possible to do the deed.

However, I was just contacted by a very kindly salesMAN offering his services. He has this thing, just like I'm trying to create with Dave's frying pan, that may do a better job. Anything, so far would be better.

The equipment and process is made by Zephyrtronics. The question of the day is whether anyone has actually heard of these nice folks, notwithstanding having used the stuff? If so what have you heard? Better yet, if you've actually touched and liked it, let me know as the rep is coming tomorrow at 0700.

Don't be shy, you all. Let's get serious and help the MoonMan in time of need. Let's all help the MoonMan. Yeah!

Hey Moon, we all need help (or maybe are beyond it). While I haven't used this product other than playing with it at the shows, I can't see where it would beat anything you have already thrown at the problem. They have been showing it for several years now. Maybe the rep can produce a miracle for you. You can do your homework on the gadget by checking out the so-called "papers" that they posted in our library last week or the week before. You'll even get the treat of being taken to their commercial web site before you can access the papers. Best of luck. John Thorup |

Well, John senior is an x marine, like me, so it can't be all bad. I mean, we can swap war stories about getting our asses shot off in a less than positive situation. Still, it all comes down to solder sucking. Ain't it all relative? What a world!

Thanks man,

However, I do have a very nice hotcake griddle, with a Leister nozzle sticking out of its middle, just waiting to be fired up. I was just hoping his hair drier was better than mine/ours, Dave.

See you,

I used their system to remove some 40 pin smt connectors. We didn't have the correct rework nozzle and the customer needed the boards yesterday, so desparation led me to try out this system. It worked suprisingly well. These connectors had some tricky board anchors, and the lower removal temp was favorable to the connectors' plactic body.

The key to the system is the low temp solder alloy. It could be used with any rework system. I was concerned with residual solder left on the pads, so we cleaned them extremely well.

It helped fight this fire, on to the next.

It worked pretty well this morning. I too was a bit surprised. It did nothing for my monster board so they are brining on the big gun next week.

I'm going to buy another of my/Dave's frying pan bottom side heater and cut a hole big enough for the 6's "nozzle" to fit through and go for it.

I'd never used the "D'solder wire" before so was surprised at how well it worked during the removal process. I'll try that on my plugged 21 mil holes and see if it combines, etc.

Thanks,

Earl

Mr. Moon,

We use the Zephyrtronics rework system here at GET Engineering Corp and like the system. We used to use a big Charisma rework station which cost a fortune for our fine pitch SMT rework. Now we use the Zephyrtronics system and have not lifted a pad since. We've even been able to remove UYK-20 connctors from PCBs and been able to save the connector. It helped with hard to remove through-hole components also. Its such a simple system that anyone is able to use it without harming the boards or components. The only complaint anyone has is that it works slower than other rework systems we've used. Overall, we've been very happy with the system.
