smt component identification | 6 September, 1999

Please excuse my ignorance, I am a brand new EET student. Can someone please tell me how to identify smt components on a pcb? ie: which is a resistor, capacitor etc, and what do those tiny numbers mean? My digital prof. did not know!!! Thanks in advance for any help...
