0402 part identification

I would like comments on how the industry handles 0402 parts, regarding identification. Since the parts are too small to be labeled, how can we accurately identify the parts and or values, either before or after assembly? When the boards go to test, and a problem arises, how does a tech trouble-shoot the board without knowing the identification or value of the 0402 part? You can't tell visually that a part is placed incorrectly. What next? Are reference designators feasible? How are part values verified? Test equipment? Luck? Are parts typically tested prior to machine loading at SMT? How are parts verified at incoming inspection? or are they?

How do you handle Capacitors, the whole chain from incoming to the bitter end ? If this process is to your satisfaction apply the same procedures to the 402s. If not, make sure either in incoming inspection or prior to assembly that the parts are checked for correct value. Some machines do have the feature for component check at least the first three of a tape. Best to have them checked at incoming inspection, barcode labeled and barcode checked at the machine.
