I am interested in discussing AOI. I am looking at introducing a system to a new SMT line. I am very interested in hearing from someone with MVP, MVT, Kestra, and CRTechnologies. The combo of x-ray and 2D inspecion that CRTechnologies offers is very interesting. Anyone out there using any of these systems?? I hope to hear your experiences, including troubles. Programming is an issue for me, in regards to the time it takes. Low false calls is also a big concern. HELP!!!

We are also looking for an AOI. Last week we saw the CRTechnologies 2D combo on the Productronica here in germany. Both systems, the x-ray and the 2D system are only "looking" from the top and therefore not all defects can be inspected. Specially solder opens cannot be seen on BGA or J-Lead components as I know.

We decided to skip every system which is only viewing from the top.

=> We took Orbotech and Viscom into short-list. Both systems uses angular cameras to inspect solder joints.

I'm also very interested to hear any experiences and posted the ORBOTECH vs. VISCOM message some days earlier.

IRSI - Integrated Reliability Corporation?

It seems they do'nt have a turnkey solution for post reflow inspection. I only found an inspection on component-(die)-level.

Do you have any additional information?

So far I'm into the investigation stage of the AOI project. The system I'm most interested in is the Intelligent Reasoning Systems, Inc. I'm after fast programming with minimal false calls. I'm not interested in X-ray. I saw the system at NEPCON last year and it won one the big awards for the show. I spoke with someone who had both the Orbotech and IRSI systems in their shop for a run off. The IRSI won hands down - no contest. That is only one persons experience and I'm not sure of all the details but it is one data point. I was also in an Intel facility that only does new product runs and they were very happy with their MVT system. It was set off to the side and not being used inline. I think it was beign used to characterize the pick and place equipment. I'm surprised at all the interes in AOI over the past 6 months but I still run across very few people who have installed and implemented a system.

Chris, Some ramblings-

Your choice depends on factors like which defects you're looking for, bugdet, quality inspection philosophy, high or low mix environment, sample sizes or 100%, and so on.

Are you going to test 100% of the product coming off the line? (Smacks of inspecting quality into the product) Or is a sample of product to protect against misloaded reels on the PaP enough?

Are you lookig for assembly defects like wrong, missing, and reversed components (of marked components) or is solder inspection a biggie?

Are false calls a big deal, or some false failures OK in order to ensure no (or few) false passes?

Is price a big constrant or is the sky the limit? This guides you to consider a combo AOI and X-ray or 2 pieces of equipment with different sample rates.

We use a couple of CR Technology AOI's. Off-line systems run under $100K. We can program an assembly from CAD data in 20 to 30 minutes, if many of the components already exist in our central library. We set up our inspection criteria for very few false passes and accept many false failures. False failures take only seconds to review while still on the AOI. We only sample product off of each surface mount line. At this point we only look for wrong, missing, and reversed components. Reportedly CRT's machines do a good job on solder bridges and toe fillets.

Think thru what is important to you, don't let the vendor tell you.
