Copper Core MCPCB vs. Aluminum Core MCPCB | 10 January, 2018

Hi All,

Currently we are producing a LED product using an aluminum core MCPCB with surface mount LEDs. In order to achieve better heat dissipation, we are considering transitioning over to a copper core MCPCB.

My experience working with copper core MCPCBs is limited so wanted to pose the question to those who have worked with these in the past - What considerations need to be taken when making such a transition above and beyond the obvious price increase? Handling, storage, solder joint reliability, corrosion, etc.?

Thank you in advance.

Copper has CTE of 17 which I think is closer to FR4 than Aluminum - 23, so in this aspect should be better. However, copper oxidizes very easily and is also 3 times heavier.
