Has anyone done breakaway tabs with v-score on both sides instead of mouse-bites? | 26 July, 2017

We have an array of boards that are difficult to depanel due to components being close to the edge. I want to route a space between strips (boards are 14" long x 1" wide) and have breakaway tabs like mouse bites, but the customer won't accept the jagged edge left from the mouse bite holes. So I'm thinking of v-scoring both sides of the tab.

I can't find anything online about whether it has been done, and haven't reached out to my board house yet. Just wondering if anyone has done it.

It can be done and is done all the time. You need to check with your customer about this since you will not have clean square corners along the edge. If they are snapping the boards into a holder they may need the square corners to securely hold the boards.

You are referring to the web left after the break, right?

I figured it was possible, but I did some searching and couldn't find anything about it.

Do you have a board or picture you could post of this?

Check with your board house and see if they can do jump-scoring.

I haven't dealt with a fab house yet that could, though, so, while it should be do-able, it doesn't appear to be super common, IMO.

Alternatively, you could sand the edges after breaking them out of the pallets. I know, no one wants to do this, and it adds time to the process, something you likely can't live with.

We've sanded bites before, but with these volumes, it would kill it.

Thanks

We make pcb depaneling equipment and many of our customers do a combination of tab routed panels with pre-score in order to speed up the singulation process. If you like, I can send you a picture of an example.

Fancort sells a router that will singulate the boards out of the panel, and smooth the edges at the same time. I had one of these at a previous job and it worked well enough.

Programming is tedious (it is done at the machine by "learning" point to point move positions in all 3 axis as well as rotation on/off), but once you have a working program the process is repeatable. It uses off-the-shelf router bits that can be bought at many vendors. While Fancort will make your fixtures (you will need a fixture for each panel you build), but they can be be made at other tooling shops cheaper. I can give you a reference if you do not already have one you prefer, but I find that most Engineers already have vendors they like to use.

Good luck, and if you think you may go the router way feel free to ask any questions.

Could always get a laser cutter to de-panelize with. I've always wanted one, personally...but, haven't been able to cost justify it.
