Is anyone using an AOI machine for through-hole checking? We have a need to check post-build on some PCBs', but there doesn't seem to be any obvious AOI solution.

Is there such a beast available?

You need to find a machine that has a camera with adjustable focal height.

Fixed cameras can inspect most smt components but soon reach their limits when it comes to inspecting taller components like thru hole.

Yes, there are many AOI machines out there that will inspect thru hole components.

With the right machine you can inspect thru hole/smt/hardware/labels/bare boards/ink stamping

We use a Mirtec MV-3L for SMT work, but now have a requirement for inspecting through hole boards. I am aware of many of the AOI machines for SMT work, but can't seem to find anything for through hole from a major (well-known) manufacturer.

Any useful suggestions as to maker, which is available in the UK?

We use Omron RNS AOI's for PTH inspection. I believe Koh Young and Omron both have 3D PTH inspection now as well.

We use our MIRTEC to inspect Thru hole axial components after they've come off of the Universal VCD machine.

I just add them to the centroid data in Circuitcam and the operators program the images like any other part.

We only use it for resistor color code and most other comps it just checks for presence.

No solder joints.
