Is it possible and does any standard cover inspecting soldering joints through conformal coating?

The next question how do you do repair through conformal coating . Opps! Better off having done all your inspection and testing first! Hopefully your question is for service!

Generally, people: assemble => inspect => conformal coat

... and standards are aligned with that philosophy.

I can imagine doing a good job inspecting assembly after being coated with particular coating thickness, optical properties, lighting conditions. Ultra-thins are so thin that can't see them.

Seems like the more that you complicate things, the more that you increase your potential for error. KISMIF

IPC J-STD-001 does not allow solder inspection to be combined with coating inspection for classes 2 and 3.

You can inspect joints using an X-ray machine and we use a sand-blaster type machine which blasts (Starch) to remove the conformal coating. (Carbo Blast). However; the inspection should be done prior to Coating, as we all know some jobs are rushed then...
