Which AOI /SPI System is the Best? Viscom S3088; Koh Young 8030 or Parmi Xceed | 21 January, 2016

Hello to All,

I have a question. We are currently under negotiation to buy a SPI/ 3D AOI as a bundle. Since there are so much of different companys, we took already 3 of them into the inner circle. What are your experiences whith these 3 Systems? I believe SPI's are all good, but which on is the best 3D AOI, regarding less false, 1st run, 2nd run success rate, mtbf and offline setup time? We want to install the system inline. But since we have normally small lots, we need especially flexibility.

What's your opinion? Which system would be the best. Do you have seen any previous benchmark results of these 3 systems?

Big thanks in advance for all your answers and help.

Best Regards

Paradoxson

Which AOI /SPI System is the Best? Viscom S3088; Koh Young 8030 or Parmi Xceed | 22 January, 2016

The answer is CyberOptics. Buy Viscom SPI and you are already buying "CyberOptics Inside". Koh Young is far too expensive these days for comparable systems and Parmi is still an "Up and Comer" with a short track history leaving most of the long term risk on your shoulders. The New SQ3000 - 3D AOI from CyberOptics is simply the best when it comes to all the requirements as you have listed. They are beating the pants of everyone in side by side evaluations. CyberOptics pioneered SPI. How can you go wrong choosing a company that virtually gave birth to all of these new kids on the block. I am always amazed when I see questions posted about SPI and AOI without CyberOptics being part of the conversation. It is the equivalent of having a Printer evaluation and excluding Speedline and DEK...No offense to the other top notch printer manufacturers! Also, digging through the murk (true performance versus spec'd sales propaganda) on 3D AOI is probably one of the biggest challenges you will ever face. Best of luck.

I agree with 3DAOI.com, in that you should be looking at Cyberoptics. They have a great product if you MUST have both of these processes in line, and if you must have 3D AOI. If you are willing to go offline, and want to get both AOI and SPI in one machine, ASC International has a AOI/SPI combo system that is stand alone, and does an excellent job. The SPI is a sample based SPI and the AOI is a standard AOI platform. THE GREAT PART OF THIS SYSTEM, IS THAT BOTH FUNCTIONS ARE IN ONE MACHINE, for a great price, and it's the only system in the industry like this !

First of all i want to say thanks for your answer. There is one thing which makes me a little bit curious about your answers. Why did Koh Young and Parmi having around 15.000 spi systems in the field. Why do koh young advertise with the slogan to be the number obe in 3D AOI. I've visited several big manufacturing lines in europe, but never saw a cyberoptics, only viscom and koh young? For Spi i always see parmi and koh young. What could be the reason if co is the best system?

Thanks again for the help and Best Regards

You are correct about KY having the lions share of 3D AOI in the industry. They were 2-3 years ahead of everyone else to entry, but the gap is closing quickly as the overall capability of KY does not justify their higher price. On the SPI front, CyberOptics was always the world leader...up until KY came in 10 years after CyberOptics introduced the structured white light sensor technology and crushed them by spending an enormous amount of money on a marketing campaign (Shadow Free) that confused the industry enough to allow everyone to jump on the same band wagon. CyberOptics eventually realized their slow demise and retooled by adding the same dual illumination sensor technology. Low value add to your overall print process, but necessary to compete with the newly formed benchmark. Parmi is winning a few accounts by selling a low-cost, laser-based SPI system. A decent product for the price with a few limited "special" features, but laser based technology in the SPI world is NOT optimal. If it was, then every SPI system manufacturer would be using it. CyberOptics is back on the path to becoming the world leader once again not only for SPI, but 3D AOI as well. Without evaluating them, it is pretty hard to discount them. You would be pleasantly surprised! Best of luck.

Koh Young is number one in both of these sectors for a reason, they do what they say they will, and they do it easily and repeatably.

Cost is a bit higher, but I believe in this case you get what you pay for.

The way I view SPI is that is simply a tool. A tool to gather data to improve printing and prevent failures down the line due to screen printer anomalies. They can all inspect paste as necessary, work in closed loop with screen printer and provide adequate speed to keep up with modern SMT speeds.

With that said, Koh Young offers a wider range of inspection criteria from any other manufacturers along with a very powerful software. They are the Lexus, Mercedes, etc.. Adjustments on the fly require more work than say.. CDK (Omron). What's all this worth to your company?

Perfect explanation of SPI as a whole. The point I would challenge is considering KY as the premier product for SPI. Yes, this fact could have been backed up 2-3 years ago. Today, KY is just another leading contender for SPI. CyberOptics along with a few other manufacturers have taken great strides in helping to reform the industry by reducing cost while still maintaining outstanding performance. It will eventually come down to price as SPI is slowly moving towards a "commodity" product with little differential between all manufactures worldwide. Service and Support capabilities will once again drive decision making. That is where I would put my money these days for both AOI and SPI.

Hello, I have used KY and Parmi and I can give you my personal opinion on these two machines. Pluses for Parmi: 1.Extremely fast - for me faster than KY. 2.More simplified than KY; 3.Simpler calibration that KY; Pluses for KY: 1.Superior 3D viewing, way better than Parmi. 2.Better SPC software. 3.Better shape check defined. Both machines use EPM, which I liked a lot. I am 50/50 on them. Whichever you chose, for me you will be extremely happy. And don't forget what other colleagues said - this process is used for printing optimization and better root cause analysis :) Best regards

Yes VISCOM uses Cyberoptiocs for SPI as they have a great optic head, but VISCOMS Ultra 2D/2.5D/3D head is best in market, I would say much better than Cyberoptics from a technical specification perspective. Has heighest part 3D height image rendering in market, up to 8 Angle cameras, higher megapixel cameras and many other technical features

I think Cyberoptics is best on SPI and VISCOM is best on AOI and with VISCOM can have both....

Also note , KY is SPI company and there 3D technology is just SPI tweaked to do 3D AOI, same can be said of Mirtec but bit better than KY. Generally they are slow in capture and this is why in EU and say high volume sites 3D has not penetrated much. Viscom worked on this and theirXM Optics raised bar on 3D speed of capture up to 10 x faster than traditional methods used by KY, Parmi, mirtec and many others.

Most high end users would use 3D as supplement technology and 2D and angle view are still main stay of inspection with 3D capture the added value.

This may change in future with more 3D capture, as technology gets faster.
