0402's for the first time!

0402's for the first time! | 24 July, 2001

We're getting geared up to start placing 0402 comps. for the first time. I'm trying to "touch all my bases" before we actually go live. I've verified our placement machine capabilities and investigated my solder paste performance in regards to 0402's is there anything I'm overlooking? It's strickly double-sided reflow, no wave solder involved. ( Not YET anyway...). Any suggestions?

I have not had the "pleasure" of placing 0402's, but I've heard stories about feeder calibration being extra critical and possibly required prior to every run depending on your placement equipment. Maybe someone with actual experience can comment on this. Thanks.

Dave is right that this site has several leads on 0402 placements and tombstoning issues. However, I found a new method of determining the pick position. Remove a component and fill the cavity with silly putty. After attempted pick up you should see a nozzle imprint in the silly putty, hopefully dead center.

Perhaps order a test kit from Topline or a similar dummy component vendor to practice on. That way, you can ensure that you get correct placement all over the board, and in different orientations. N

my guys SOP :

Round #1 1) take double-side tape, and peel it flat to the PCB. 2) process this PCB only through P&P SMT. 3) confirm the SMD placement

Round #2 4) take thin plastic sheet and tape corners flat to the PCB. 5) solder paste print over the plastic sheet,

6) remove the plastic sheet and check print condition: 6.a) smear print 6.b) misalign print 6.c) insufficient print

Round #3 7) process one PCBA thru' printer & SMT P&P 8) check for any solder wetting mishaps?

If hey'O k?, for the solder fillet joint formation, then you're set :)

Round #5 9) we were plagued by 0402 tombstone *shivers* 10) we were plagued by 0402 unsolder defects *shivers*

BUT, won't venture into that debug, coz it could go on for ages, plus all em' experts out there, would be avail to harp & criticize, on what "SOP" to adhere....

Just rem, no problem has a fix universal soluion, today's heresay can be tomorrow's procedure...
