Looking for equipment | 20 February, 2014

I'm in the market for some new (to me) pick and place equipment, and, could use some opinions.

I'm a MyData guy by experience, and have recently been working on some older Philips machines.

I'm comfortable on a MyData platform due to experience, but, I'm not locked in to the platform for this particular search.

What I need is capacity, and reliability, coupled with moderate ease of use. I need a machine that will have realized placement rates in excess of 15,000 cph. The placement mix will be 5-10 different parts, nothing smaller than an 0805/SOT-23.

Again, I need realized placement rates of 15,000 cph and up. It doesn't do me any good to get a machine that's rated to 15,000 but only gives me 8,000 in operation.

So...opinions, please. I'm looking for the best value, as we're a growing operation, and don't have a ton to spend.

Universal Instruments AC30L. Rated at over 30k CPH but dependent on mix you will realize between 18k and 24k CPH REAL speeds. Very flexible with feeder cart swapping. Wide component mix. American made and the best support of any p&p company. Sounds like you are not looking for "new". Check with your UIC rep, there are often refurb machines available from UIC with factory warranty, installation, and support.

Or, for a lot less money, you could consider a Universal GSM2 with two FlexJet heads. Speed for chip components is 20,000 cph. The GSM is very easy to program and operate. There are thousands still in operation, so parts and service is readily available.

Thanks, I've been glancing at Universals, too. Knowing that they do factory refurbs is a factor.

We're considering all avenues at this point. The owner likes not having debt in the company, so, cash purchases are of interest...which does lead us to the used market. There's also the consideration that we're a small start-up, and that we'll have a lot of eggs in the one basket with this customer (at least at first). We're ok with taking on that risk, but, are trying to limit it as much as we can.

On the one hand, we'd rather not be stuck on a multi-year finance note, in case the business with this customer dries up; on the other hand, to get the kind of machine capacity I'm looking for, I might not have a choice.

The higher population board will actually be 7 feeders. Smallest parts are 0805 and SOT-23's.

Looking for equipment | 26 February, 2014

I am not an objective candidate for a Machine manufacturer selection, I only know Fuji's. But, it sounds like a good fit for a Fuji XP series machine. And of course, I will try to find a good one and install it for a fee. The price of a used XP varies from 50-100k, for the earlier models, near 200k for a used XPF. Any interest, let me know, I will give further details.
