HI! We have a QUAD 4C since 8 months . Yesterday the head remained immobile in the position where it put the last component to complete a board and indicates Motor Error # 5 (SRX engine communication time-out) and I don’t know what it means and how to fix it. Press Reset but nothing, I turn off the machine and initialize again and immediately starts the alarm and maintaining the error in the hand-held terminal (with head still in place, doesn’t move to Home). Still remains much to be learned from it. I would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Motor Error 5 is usually an interlock error. Take off the rear right cover and look at the red and green led's on the driver cards. If they are both lit....you have a door open or if you have carts....a feeder base switch is up.

Thanks for the response bobpan! LED's on the driver cards work well (green with doors closed and both red&green on with door open), and I don't use the carts. The head doesn't move after power on and inmediately you can listen alarm.

I would check the following:

1. Make sure the head can move in all axis including z and theta by physically moving each. 2. Check the voltage from the main power supply which is located in the middle of the machine on the top of the main board assembly. 3. You can check each individual axis to see if its working by changing dip switch 1 position 8 to off instead of on (on the EPCU card). Once you do this....normal homing will not happen and you can use your handheld to home individual axis. This may show you where the problem is. 4. You can also try resetting the main EPCU card by powering off the machine and removing the battery...then put it back in. You will have to reload in all the mod codes so only do this if you have all your settings saved. 5. It is possible your motor controller card is bad. This is very rare but a possibility. I dont know of a way of verifying if its working or not. You just will have to replace it.

Hi bobpan! Here I'm again.

Item 1: OK Item 2: OK Then I reseted the main EPCU card by removing the battery. The head moved to Home,then the head was shifted through the Y axis and X axis, to return to Home (I was very happy at that time), then from the central controller I downloaded MOD Codes (Utilities --> Data base Utilities --> Download MOD Codes to assembler) and the motor error # 5 appeared instantly in the handheld.

Clear the memory again and try to input by handheld the modcodes 1 by 1 and see when the problem happens. You can input a number then press home and home. Sounds to me like a number is incorrect but its hard to tell. Are you sure the file that you are downloading from is a good file with good modcodes in it?

We have two QUAD 4C working in tandem. 3 months ago the EPCU battery (QUAD # 2) died, then we change it. Then downloaded the MODs from the controller to the assembler(does simultaneously on both machines). All this time we continue to work normally. Two weeks ago we had problems with the z rod and laser cyberoptics on QUAD # 2 (which will be the subject of another post when I get around this) and I just started to work only with the QUAD # 1, just now encounter problems with the MODs and as enter 1 by 1 I'll know what happened. (Battery on EPCU #1 is OK)

Well, the error occurs with Mod Code 56 (dispenser enable). Head # 1 has installed this accessory, but we use it very little and it wasn't this time. I probed setting 0,1,2 and 3. I downloaded Mod Codes from controller to assembler, then the error begins, so I enter Mod codes via Handheld. Its like the file where they are stored is corrupt, I used previously without problems. I disconnected the dispenser main board too because error starts again. The only way without error is entering data via Handheld and dispenser board disconnected. What do you think? I wanted to upload all new Mod Codes from Assembler, the correct ones, to overwrite existing data that cause error, but manual says "This is used on IIIc and 2000 only", can I do it with 4C? Thanks again.

It sounds like your dispenser has a problem....The default mod code for 56 is 0 (this should be off). Thats why when you cleared the mod codes the machine was able to home. When you reload your saved mod codes it is probably set to 1. The machine will then try to home the dispenser and its having a problem. Keep the dispenser turned off until you get time to look at it.

Yes you can upload modcodes from assembler. This works for all quad c-series machines along with some others. I would NOT overwrite anything. I would save them to a new file so you have the originals. Your original modcodes are good.....your machine has a problem with the dispenser.

quick background.

I am very new to the Quad machines, I used to "run" one, but I never learned the inner workings of a machine.

I just purchased 2 used quad 4cs, I had a training session over the weekend with a very knowledgeable guy and learned a lot. I came into work today, ,flipped on my machine and immediately got -- MOTOR ERROR 5. I went to my manual, and there is no troubleshoot instruction for that error.

I removed the back right panel and all the LEDs are on and working, no issue there.

Could you take me on a very detailed step by step troubleshoot? I would like to not have to call on my guy on pretty much day 1 of existence.

Are both red and green leds on for the driver cards (they are located in the bottom right of the machine). If they are both on then you have an interlock opened. If this is the case....check the side doors....sometimes they are not shut all the way.
