When are conveyors required

Is it every ok to put the output of one machine at the input of another machine? For example, can a pick and place machine be lined up immediately after the paste machine. Or, is it recommended to use a conveyor between the two?

I've seen the Pick n Place immediatly after the Screen Printer, but they have a good 2D inspection, so the really do not need an operator to inspect or remove any PCB before the Pick n Place, if you have a good Printer I will not foresee any problem to put them like that. Also many Pick n place are placed right next to the other.

Consider access requirements of the machines. It's no fun having to move a machine to gain access to a compartment when troubleshooting a problem.

I agree with JDengler. It is easier to service a machine if there are conveyors between them. You need to also consider how the units get transferred, SMEMA signaling or some other method. Some equipment doesn't support this and an output conveyor/buffer is always a good idea. But regardless, I would recommend having some buffer between machines anyway.

I agree with the comments above. I also belive it is a very good idea to have a small conveyor after the screenprinter. It makes it much easier to set-up and/or program the machine. There will be some instances when you transfer a PCB into the screenprinter, with no intention of processing it downstream. Some placement machines might allow you access to pull a PCB offline prior to transferring it in, but I've certainly seem some that make this difficult.

It is not a requirement to put conveyors between machines, but it is much more comfortable.
