Can TH component be placed on solder side of Single Side PCB? | 17 July, 2013

I have a CM project that is a single sided pcb (not plated thru holes) and I have 3 axial resistors that the Customer wants placed on the "solder side" of the board. I cannot find an IPC-A-610 reference to putting parts on the wrong side of a single sided PCB. Does this comply with IPC-A-610?

Sure. Section 7.4 covers unsupported holes, and defines the usual standards. Clinching, fillet on the plated side, lead protrusion, etc.

Cheers, ..rob

argh! the 6 ends of the resistors soldered to another though hole part to give the pcb track mechanical strength or are they just soldered to a remote pad, so if the resistors are knocked it has the possibly of ripping the track from the pcb.

The parts are just soldered to the pads. There isn't another part on the opposite side if thats what you're asking.

Everything in 7.4 shows the clinch and fillet on the other side, assuming the body is mounted on the Component side. In my case, the fillet will be on the body side.

It's what the customer wants. remember the customer is always right and that IPC is only recommended guidelines the last time I looked. I also belive IPC shows examples of PTH parts being preped and lap soldered to SMT pads so common sense says what's the difference?

I don't see an issue. As was mentioned before, it is what the customer wants. You could approach this from one of two ways. You could simply install the parts, clinch the leads on the opposite side for added mechanical strength and solder the parts next to the component body. Or, ignore the fact that there's a hole, and form the resistors with gull wing leads and solder as described by IPC 610A 8.3.6.4.
