Hello again, another previously covered topic I am sure,but do AOI systems need to have angled cameras? I have my own thoughts on this but I would like to hear what the consensus with the SMTNET population might be.

In my experience, no. There are some uses for angled cameras (I've used them for inspecting off marks like notches out of LEDs for polarity), but I never found the results repeatable enough to warrant using the angled cameras over the standard, straight down camera.

That's just my experience with one manufacturer though, so a grain of salt, and all that.

I successfully inspect solder on plcc's with angled cameras on the yestech we have. In the past I have successfully inspected for solder with angled cameras on mirtec machines for both plcc's and qfn's. Other than inspecting solder on those two types of packages, there is only one other use I have found with the angled cameras and that is for the operators when they are reviewing possible defects. An example would be on a qfp solder lead bank, since we are using no clean flux, sometimes glare from the flux will look like a short. While reviewing the false call, the operator can turn on the angled camera to verify if there is actually any bridging.
