Colleagues, Now I am involved into plant ramp-up where 3x Panaconic NPM-W will be installed. New production hall is being designed right now and the problem is that constructors have never met SMT shops and know very few or next to nothing about requirements. The problem I am really worried about is placement machines mechanical stability. I do understand there must be concrete layer thick enough to stabilize machines. How thick does it have to be? Are there any industrial standards clearly defining rammed(?) concrete thickness for designed static/dynamic load? Do you filter air inside your shop? What pore size you normally use and how frequently do you change filters? Are there any special SMT shop floor clarity requirements similar to microelectronic ones? Is filtering required or it can be avoided at all? Thank you in advance.

I can't answer your specific question on the floor, but I have some suggestions. The equipment manufacturer should be able to provide the floor loading requirements. A structural engineer should be able to translate that into specs for hte construction crew.

For the environmnetal, we just use standard air conditioning filters and change them when the sensor in the AC system detects too much pressure differential. I recomend you look at J-STD-001 for aditional guidelines such as lighting, ESD protection, and correct temperature control for the area. You should also make sure the AC system is sized correctly to draw in external air to replace what the ovens exhaust out of the building.

Thank you for the input. Could you please check your standard filter pore size? A model number would be valuable. How many shop volumes (in cubic meters) do you pump per hour? Customer is seriously thinking over installing AC system similar to microelectronic one (those pricey ones with filter pores down to 10um, constant positive pressure and air flow. I merely wonder if it is necessary. Does J-STD-001 define SMT shop requirements in terms of ESD/RH/T as well? I have found it primarily refers to soldering.

ANSI/J-STD-001: * Temperature and Humidity: 18-30°C, 30-70%RH ** If out of range, shall verify electrostatic discharge control program according to ANSI/ESD S20-20 is adequate. ** For process control, more restrictive temperature and humidity limits may be required. * Lighting to comply with OSHA Standard 29CFR1910.178. * Maximum noise limit of 90 dBa per 8 hour or 115 dBa per 15 minutes maximum interval.

Thank you. I wonder if you have ever faced with concrete layer thickness selection for SMT shops? All I have found refers to metal treatment shops (primarily milling & drilling). 6" concrete is thick enough for them to stabilize milling machines (5 tons per sq. m. + dynamic load). If it works under worse circumstances, it will do it's job for SMT as well. What do you think?

You're correct that you should consider the point loading of your placement, wave and other machines. I've put shops above the ground floor of buildings. Equipment suppliers are the best source of information about these requirements.
