looking for a bit of advice really, our current reflow oven (surfair 510) is in the process of slowly dieing so we are in the market for a replacement. I havent followed technologies on ovens for a while but im looking for something that is low to mid volume capable of both 60/40 and rohs and also higher temps as we are looking at providing 200 degs c plus equipment. should we be looking at nitrogen ? but im worried about the costs. im not sure if i have a budget to purchase new so may need to go 2nd user. any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated btw the surfair 510 is 5 zone so something close or better :)

In my experience used reflow ovens have been problematic. There are lots of adequate or better reflow systems out there that wont break the bank too badly....the N2 question, if you are going to be using solder that requires higher reflow temp than does RoHS alloy, you may want to look into it as it will help with the extreme oxidation that will occur at those elevated temps. but otherwise there are just a few reasons to use N2 and most of them are because its a band aid to other issues that you havent solved....just my 2 cents....anvil

I would reccomend at least a 8 zone system when doing RoHs. Most of the better systems (Vitronics, heller, BTU, ETC) built since 2006 should be able to run the higher temps for Pb Free. Should be a lot of them on the market world wide (used) with low hours.

Stay away from used Nitrogen ovens unless you have a specific need for it. The flux management is a pain in the arse to clean. I don't care how simple they claim it is.

We have been using a Heller 1707EXL (7 zones + 1 cooldown zone) for lead free (ROHS) soldering since 2007 with good results. I wouldn't go any lower than 7 heat zones though.

If I may brag a bit....The IPC-7095 revision C standard was released a few weeks ago. On the cover is a cross-sectional picture of near perfect BGA solder joints done on our production floor in the oven listed above.

They are well made, ALL stainless tunnel , 3 phase blowers, highly realiable, and they have new entry level series called VXC Series starting at 6 zones+, but based on same tech and build as the high end VXP series as used by many large OEMS globally....
