Hello,

We need information regarding the specifics of soldering Nickel Silver in a reflow process. Is there a specific process / flux / cleaning / Temperature curve / or whatever required in order to properly process parts from this material? Nickel Silver 770, 55%Cu/27%Cu/18%Zn

Hi Dave,

We do not reflow those parts but are merely a supplier. Therefore I need to have our application specs in order. So, in case the customer has a problem I want to be able to properly support the customer. Hence, I'm curious about the details. We did a reflow soldering test 2 weeks ago and we found the quality to be insufficient. So, which detail might be the culprit? Are you saying that any standard reflow process which can be used for soldering connectors or SMT parts should suffice?

Use a standard that everyone will recognize. If you say, "The solderability test was performed in accordance with ANSI/J-STD-002 'Solderabiility Tests for Component Leads, Terminations, Lugs, Terminals and Wires'” [ipc.org/TOC/J-STD-002C.pdf ], everyone will pause when questioning the solderability of your parts.

Solder paste flux formulation can make a difference when soldering to nickel silver...due to the alloy containing metals that oxidise easily like zinc and nickel then the flux has to be able to cope with the surface oxidation when the parts are in the reflow oven. But your parts still need to pass any solderaility tests that the industry requires...but if the assembler isn't using a paste that is suitable for nickel silver then they may get poor results...make sure your customers ask their paste supplier for proof that their solder paste works on nickel silver ( the supplier should have done wetting /reflow tests on these difficult metals)
