Growing pains | 12 February, 2013

Everyone that goes through this (the lucky ones, I guess, as lack of growth is not a positive indicator) has to react effectively or temper their growth.

To anyone here that's gone through it, what are the top 3 changes that you made (or would like to make) to bring you some kind of improved comfort level? I don't want to get into details but we are seeing things in various parts of the business that we just didn't see with less stuff on the schedule.

And yes, I know this isn't necessarily a bad problem to have, but I don't think you can live with it as the status quo indefinitely....at some point it you either have to resolve the problems with improvements or they go away for the wrong reasons.

I'd write a Corrective Action Request on every single thing that wasn't the way I thought it should be. Highlight the problems that you see, maybe someone else will agree with you. * When you're declining, no one wants more things to fix, because everything is broken and everyone is depressed * When you're growing, it the perfect time to invest in the system. People are up and ready to attack walls.

Ok, so here's my 2 cents

1. Its difficult to fix everything all at once. Prioritize and pick the top issues.

2. I've had good results with Kiazen events. They breed a culture of excelence and involve the employees in the change, making them owners of the improvement not victims.

3. My old boss used to say "in God we trust, all others bring data" SPC is the key to controlling your processes, and to understanding if you are making progress.

4. Learn. so many factries get stagnant because people don't look outside to see what others are doing. Visit your vendors ask them how they handled their growing pains. Ask questions at your local SMTA meetings and attend factory tours when they have them. Remember, no matter what problem you have, someone else somewhere has already solved it.

All good comments from everyone and all things we're either working on now or know we should but can't because our resources are already stretched too thin.

Frankly I hate CAPAs because I hate getting them. Maybe I'd learn to love them if I initiated them more often and got some results......

When I was a little boy I saw a fly on top of another fly, I thought they were fighting, since fighting people make a mess, thinking we can not have fighting flys. So I whacked them over the head with the rolled up advertising section of a newspaper.

The moral of the story is "I would still do it again today" and

Remember: a tidy workshop is a happy workshop.
