Choosing Solder paste | 3 December, 2012

Hi all,

We are going to evaluate new LEAD-FREE solder paste. We stopped our attention on 3 manufacturers but the variety of products is so big. What would you recommend for a daily basis use? Is SAC305 the most commonly used alloy? We are a subcontractor and we run a big variety of products. For some of them we will use special solder paste based on the board design or customer requirement, but I wonder what is the best to use for the majority of the products?

Last 6 years I work with EM907 from Kester, with SAC305. And I don't have any problems.

AIM is the best to use for the majority of the products.

AIM can give a good result, I tried the solder paste from many manufacturer - AIM, Kester, Indium, Koki, Alpha Metals, Heraeus - but I stopped my choice at Kester. For example, right now I have EM907 with date of manufacture in february 2010 (it's just for experiment) - and I know that this jar can solder very well! But in data-sheet you read about "shelf life is 6 month after DOM".

SAC305 - it's just a metal composition of solder paste. All properties of solder paste depend on chemical composition of flux and other components - I don't know their names in English, sorry.
