MYDATA My9 Theta error | 13 November, 2012

For the past few weeks we have experienced an intermitent midas theta error.During normal production the machine times out while just after picking up a component waiting for the theta to center it.Sometimes it fails to leave a tool. Reinitianing the machine ocasionally helps, sometimes it doesn't. Has anybody experience a similar situation? Solution? This are the errors we are getting:

F-AXIS-Theta/7: Axis not stable F-MOT-Move Theta/156: Motor time out

I can't remember what motor control cards in the machine are interchangeable, but if the controller card for the theta axis is a common control card then you can swap out the one currently controlling the theta axis with a different axis and see if the problem disappears or if it follows the controller card.

That's where I would start. (Motor controller cards should be in the front of the machine on the left side behind the front cover).

I'll try swaping cards and see if the problem follows the card. So far, my guess would be the motor going bad. I did change the brushes, X wagon cables and every cable that goes to the midas unit. But that didn't fix it. The problem is that to replace the midas motor we would have to buy the whole head.

11/15/12: I didn't swap mot cards, but I did repair a broken resistor. There is a resistor and a filter? under shrink tubing soldered across the the Z motor. The lead of the resistor was broken at the body of the resistor. But there was enough lead to reattach one. Once repaired, I put the head back ( had to take it off the machine to rework it)

That was yesterday, and for the remainder of the day and as of today, the theta error has not appeared. So it is still under evaluation but in full production mode.

I would have said it sounded like a motor/encoder problem...but, since you found the broken resistor, that was likely the source of your issue. The resistor and capacitor are a filter for the motor, MyData likes to put them on nearly all of the motors on the machine.

You mentioned that you would need a new head if the motor was bad....why do you think that? The motor should be able to be replaced independently of the rest of the head. They're not cheap from MyData, but, it is cheaper than a whole head. You can also find the motors on the open market (check the motor for the p/n), but, it won't come with the encoder.

robgd3,

The Z motor can be purchased separately, however, the theta motor can't. You need to buy the whole midas head. I didn't get as far as dissembling the theta motor casing to get to the theta motor. That was my worse case scenario.

We ran thousands of placements by the midas today, the error hasn't appeared yet. Hope it stays this way.

Thanks for your input.

Theta error came back again during our first production run. Swaped motcards as a final attempt to find an easy fix and nothing. I swapped heads with another MYDATA to positively isolate the problem. And the theta error followed the head.

Well before you totally give up on the midas head, you may wanna try changing out the ffx board/cable on it to make sure the one in there isn't binding once in a while and giving you your theta errors.

Bruce,

Since we had spares, I replaced the X wagon cables, XFMB cable, nothing. FFX Cable, nothing. Swapped mot cards, nothing. Vaccum seal, nothing. At this point I truly believe the problem is either on the theta encoder or the theta motor. Unfortunately both encoder and motor aren't sold separetly we must buy the head.

Interesting, it seems the theta error followed the ZFIB board, running the machine with the original theta error and using the ZFIB board from the second machine since Thursday, no errors since...will continue to evaluate and post results...

New ZFIB board installed today. Running ok, theta error has not appeared yet. Will post updates as we continue to evaluate.

So just to update and close this thread, it was the ZFIB board ( the one mounted on top of the theta motor) that was causing the theta motor to error out) Problem fixed. $ 30 dls or so from MYDATA. Hope this helps some one down the road.
