Please help..... I beg of you | 16 October, 2012

Hello all you wonderful people!

I am an engineering student and I am fascinated by the revolution that SMT has brought in the world of electonics manufacturing.

But I am completely new to SMT and I know nothing about it. I did visit a few places where I saw assembly machines putting components on the pcb at phenomenal speeds.

I want to know about all the processes involved. I want to learn everything about it. Please suggest me a book or site which has resources for beginners or some resource where I can start.

I want to know about the whole process and the different materials used.

Please reply. I know all of you there are really busy and important, but I humbly ask request to spend a few minutes here.

What have you learned so far via google? I just put SMT placement machine" into google and got http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMT_placement_equipment

I am not sure what the bottom picture means (SMD pick-and-place machine (with simulated motion blurs) my guess is someone somewhere out there loves what they did to a photo, as for the feeders second photo down, I use then all the time.

No wonder you come here that page does not say much., But maybe someone has has a link to better information, that might save me dribbling on wasting time, I have not found anything yet on Internet.

By the way just a few weeks ago, we had someone put on a introduction, but when I asked him what smt equipment he used, we never got a answer, then I sent him a personnel email, that was a waste of time too.

Thanks for replying... yes i have tried out wikipedia... but it doesnt provide the details... its very general and most of it left me confused... is there a book or something? its funny that SMT is multi billion industry and there are no good resources to know about it. and i have another doubt.... I saw this ad for manual pick and place machine(if i understood it right) well how hard or easy is it to assemble things with such a machine? Its obvious the speed will be less... what are other disadvantages?

Go to my page, it has a links list. You could easily spend months reading the material. This site has a fair bit of specific information. SMT magazine is a good light read on SMT topics.

There was another thread on this recently. But in answer to your question the manual placers are at least half as slow as a container on the desktop and the board sitting in front of you.

and are there good chances of open contacts and solder errors? and are they cheap? (im talking about the manual pick and place machine)

and yes... i also wanted to know what are skills i must master to be able to work with smt.

and where can i learn pcb design? any good software that you recommend? I have eagle, though i have never used it... is it good for smt also?

My guess is a manual machine would be good for a after sales "repair station" or the engineers doing product development, without it you would have almost drop a large integrated circuit (IC) on to the spot and poke around with it moving it sideways to make sure all the IC pins align correctly with the solder pads.

In the web page link above, the top photo looks like it can pick only two parts (maximum) at a time before going over the PCB panel to place them, some machines can do three parts at once. On that page also it mentions "suction cups" The machine I use dont use suction cups they are "nozzles"

If you want to learn about SMT try the book, "Surface Mount Technology - Principles and Practice" (Second Edition) by Ray P. Prasad. It is 15 years old but contains much of the information you are looking for. You should be able to find at least a used copy for sale via the internet.

I would not recommend a manual placement machine. They are a waste of good money. As they slow down the process. A vacuum pickup unit for superfine IC placement maybe! Good twizzers for caps and resistors. Either 2 irons or a twizzer iron for prototype assembly. Anyway go on Youtube and you will find plenty of demonstrations of tool use by Engineers, Techs and Company Sales representatives.

As for Eagle I find it a bit of a PITA to use. Try Kicad for something that is easier for beginners.

I couldn't find that book though. But there are some books that are on the net but not available in India(where I live).

Thanks a lot to all of you. If you find new resources please keep me posted
