Smt parts in strips | 2 May, 2012

Our company has recently changed the way our cage gives our SMT Department their parts to try to better control inventory. SMT now instead of recieving reels recieves strips with only 2-20 extra parts depending and the size/cost of the part. Does anyone have ANY ideas on how we can decrease the problem of the strips jamming the feeders(while loading and while running)and, short parts(machine and setup waste)? We have Samsung and Mydata machines, any help with one or both would be greatly appreciated!

waste of time - get your materials manager to work on the smt floor for a week and see how ridiculous this approach is! saving pennies while adding time between setups, looking for parts and as you said issues with pickup etc....

Count-On-Tools makes a neat holder for presenting short strips of taped SMT components to a placement head. http://www.smtnet.com/company/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_company&company_id=51639

Let us add to this by saying, we don't work for the company referenced above, don't own stock in the company referenced above, have never known anyone who works at the company referenced above and whether you buy a product from the company referenced above or not we don't get anything for writing this. I'm guessing you're running small batches of boards on the MyDatas. We had the same issue with management when they decided to save on parts (not realizing it cost them more in time and more frustration for us). We had Agilis feeders so that helped. We'd peel back the strips and keep the first 5-6 components in case we needed them at the end. Parts bigger than 1210 we'd stick them on the tray wagon and create "trays" for them.

We build all our stuff in "kits" as you describe. We don't have much trouble running short on parts at the end although most of our equip. is new which helps a lot. We also have feeders that can run in reverse on set-up stations and we reload parts during feeder loading if it's larger package size. A couple tricks we use are adhesive "lead extenders" and cutting the front end of the tape to a shape that runs through the feeders more reliably (cut the sharp corners off). If your feeders are not so reliable, you'll need to figure out the scrap rate for various package sizes and have them issue the kits with overages for you.

Teaching trays (considering you already have the package in your library) takes about 2 mins. Really comes in handy for small batches when ICs/BGAs are supplied in small strips.

We run a Mydata high mix, low volume line. You can handle strips with either the Agilis feeders (losing the first 5-10 parts) or by placing the strip on the Y or tray wagons. For cheap parts like resistors, capacitors, some diodes and small ICs, our experience shows you are better off using reels than short strips. Loading reels with the Agilis feeders is very quick and easy whereas handling strips is slow in comparison. The extra cost in setup time will cost you more than you save in better inventory control on the cheap parts. Plus, how much extra time does it take for them to measure a strip and cut it off from the reel compared to just handing you the reel?

This is a battle I had to fight with management. I had to time every step and come up with hard data before I could convince them that buying reels for the cheap parts actually saved $$$ over buying cut tape.

Seems like this is a common theme. It was always an uphill battle with management to get them to understand small strips costs us more time which in turn costs more money. Our management never got it so we had to think of ways around it.
