Who can recommend a reliable solder volume measurement m/c? | 6 June, 2001

Any blokes in process/QA, can recommend a solder volume, measurement machine, that has proven reliability, in its data readings, prefer that it comes, similar to "SMT m/c" camera-program-function, to remove operator-user variation. Appreciate any help here mates :)

There's over a hundred postings on the topic in the SMTnet archives. Consider:

1 Determining scale / technology of the equipment that you think will solve your needs

2 Running a Gauge R&R on various suppliers of that scale of equipment

Hi Dave F,

thanks for the reply, what I did was evaluate, the ASC International, 3D solder paste VOLUME m/c, thru a local s'pore vendor, and this sales-guy is pulling a rip-off, coz his knowledge of the m/c seems inconsistent.

I had sent ASC a email, asking the sales office to recommed a list, of s'pore distributors, to no avail.

Based on your personal recommendations, any piece of hardware that produres, great accuracy + automated control, when it comes to VOLUME solder measurements? any link to SPC charts data outputs, would be great!

Thanks for the help.

Regards, Ian Chan / QA

Dear Mr. Chan,

ASC International apologizes for any confusion or mis-representation you have experienced. It is unfortunate that we did not receive your email regarding local S'pore ASC distributors.

If, after all this, you may still have an interest in our equipment, please contact me directly. ASC International wants to make sure that you are provided with all the information necessary for you and your company to perform a through evaluation of our products.

Best regards,

The CyberOptics LSM 300 cannot provide true 3D volumetric measurements. It is impossible to measure volume using a "Box" that is drawn around a feature without the same characteristics. Owners of the LSM 300 try it for yourself. Move the stripe around within the "Box" and see how the volume changes. You will see many hundreds of cubic mils variation from your simple test. If you want to use volume as a means to control your printing process, throw any idea of using this method in the garbage. You are setting yourself up for huge failures downstream.

It is time for people to become educated with the basic principles of SMT Inpection.

PLEASE!!!! If that were the case then a 6 mil stencil is not a 6 mil stencil depending on paste, pressure, snap off......

We have and use the LSM 300 paste inspection to great degree of success (esp. for solder paste on semiconductor devices).

So with that said....just as unhappy you are with Cyber Optics equipment we are just as Happy.

Air your dirty laundry elsewhere.

Cal,

I can only respond by saying that the question relates to one important word "Reliable". If you feel that you have found the special touch to provide accurate and repeatable results, then I applaud your hard work. Also, a counter attack by companies that have recieved favorable incentives to display manufacturers products does not prove to be a fair representation of the real world.

Airing dirty laundry is a pretty harsh statement considering the valitity behind a well-know truth.

I guess the forum was designed for one-sided debates!

Good luck.

I missed the laundry part [but then again, I couldn't figure-out that "AMT" as THE typo]

That aside, I have no problem with what Cyber said. Continuing, we have talked about all of the following issues in previous threads on SMTnet: * LSM 300 does not measure volumes and people basing the process control on height measurements should be aware of that limitation. * LSM 300 has a lousy gauge R&R. * A microscope can provide similar capabilities, while avoiding the high cost of the LSM 300.
