Quad IVc pickup problem | 25 April, 2011

Hello, First of all I am new to the forum and surface mount machinery in general. The machine in question has a problem picking parts correcly. The main problem seems to be that the camera and actual head location is out of calibration?

If I do a runstep-pickup # the camera/crosshair is correctly aligned over the part to be picked up, if I do a switch/verify the nozzle is ~ 60mils offset from the camera location.

The other trainee was playing with the machine all today, adjusting part offsets and he said that during a board run it started doing this. So im at a loss because it could either be operator error to the program or a hardware error.

All we have done is ensured clean encoders and checked the mod codes but still having the same problem. Im aware of some of the other possibilities but would like some experienced opinions.

Thanks. Mike

Have you performed the camera to nozzle calibration ? I can send you instructions for this if you need them.

Thanks for the reply. I have not performed the camera to nozzle calibration. Is this the same as the calibration of the vu3 camera in the manual? If you would please give me your instructions, any help is appreciated.

The camera to nozzle offset calibration requires that you modify some of the mod codes once the offsets are calculated. This is not part of the VU3 calibration.

Send me your email address so that i can attach a copy of the manual for you.

I got the camera nozzle offset corrected but after the machine runs for a while the offset will drift and its out the specs I set it to. Any help is appreciated.

Are you uploading the mod codes to your central controller when you change them? If not when you run your produciton the central controller will download the mod codes that are stored in the CC. You might also have an encoder problem. When the machine "drifts" and you check the mod codes that you changed are they the same values?

After changing mod codes 50,51 and 54,55 respectively on the HHT I will then goto ccconfig.sys file in the central controller software and manually enter in the new mod code values. I do not do any uploading/downloading of mod codes through database editor.

Progress ive made since yesterday is that I calibrated nozzle/camera, ran a function 14 to check X,Y axis limits.

I then ran a program which we use after greasing all parts to work the grease in, went back and checked X,Y axis limits and the X axis rose +10 steps. I go back and check camera/nozzle location and it is still pretty much dead on.

It does sound as if you may have an encoder problem. Have you cleaned the encoder glass ? A spec of grease or other matter on theis glass can cause problems. Be careful when cleaning because you do not want to break it. Clean the front of the encoder strip with an alchohol wipe. We then use a thin IC tube that has a alchohol wipe wrapped around the end to clean the backside of the strip. There is one encoder strip for each axis. Again be careful.

Multiple times i have seen where the downward camera lens inside of the camera becomes detached inside. It is just glued down. To see if this is the problem. Park the head over a spot and tap on the camera every direction. The crosshairs should NOT move. If it does....dis-assemble the camera and glue the lens down (inside the optics) again.

Hope this helps.
