X-Ray Inspection of Plated PCB - Need Your Input | 11 December, 2009

Hi All,

I have a PCB that is bonded on an aluminum plate. The size of PCB is 11" x 8" and 0.065" Thick, The aluminum plate has the same size and thickness as the PCB.

Process is Lead Free.

Questions:

Is it possible and achieveable to bond the PCB with only 20% of void area?

Is it possible to measure and quantify the void area using an X-Ray machine?

thanks and regards

Xrays go through aluminum quite well. I've xrayed BGAs with heat sinks that were well over an inch tall and they only made faint shadows.

What material is the bottom of the PCB? And how are you going to bond to it?

Sounds like a good challenge. What is your interconnect bond method? Solder Paste, Pre-Form/Liquid Flux or Paste, Assuming your using solder. Reflow method?

Back in a former life, we had 3 products that were PCBs bonded to aluminum boards. We used a PSA from 3M to bond the board to the aluminum. Polymers are almost invisible in x-ray, but ultrasound worked quite well. You should try CSAM. Don't know how you're bonding the board, but the PSA system took a while to work out the process to optimize the bond surface.
