Are there pick and place machines for loose components? | 31 July, 2009

Does anyone know of fully automatic pick and place machines that can pick up parts either from small pieces of cut tape (i.e. 0402's, 0603's, SOT's) or components loosely arranged on a tray (not ic's that are in matrix trays)?

Application is prototype builds so quantities are very low. Main interest in this is because its costly to purchase reels with 4k - 5k components plus all the feeders. I know with manual units handling loose components is not an issue its just that the process is labor intensive and very slow.

You can use cut tape on Mydata machines fairly easily. We are a high mix, low volume manufacturer who has to use cut tape often as that is what our EMS customers provide.

It is does take more time to load/unload than a reel does so you need to figure out what your operator's time is worth. Often with Rs and Cs it is better use of your money/time to buy the reel and throw away unused parts than it is to take the time to put several cut tape strips on and off.

Thanks for the info. On the Mydata do you position the cut tape inside a feeder or place it on a tray of some sort? Here the environment is OEM R&D lab so a Mydata would be overkill in terms of size and cost. I was thinking of a smaller auto pick and place.

On our Mydata machine, we place a piece of scrap bare pcb next to the pcb we are loading. Using double sided tape, we attach the cut tape strip to the bare pcb, then program the machine to pick up the parts from that location.

The smallest Mydata machine, MY9, with a single place head may only be slightly overkill for you. Any of their other machines would be far more than you need.

My Essemtec machine can use "restband" feeders. They are manual feeders that simulate trays, but are specifically made to hold tapes.
