Lead Free Equipment Maintenance - Respirators

Lead Free Equipment Maintenance - Respirators | 23 March, 2009

We have recently installed a selective solder machine that is running SN100C alloy. Based on the fact that the pot maintenance is done inside the equipment where adequate ventilation is present and we aren't dealing with lead, I don't see the need for respirator protection. Our safety officer is asking about it and I'm not sure I have a leg to stand on with this argument.

Has anyone addressed this and/or disagree?

Thanks.

We agree with you. BUT why not ask your safety guy for support from an industrial hygienist? We get them to come by once a year and do an audit.

It maybe that you should use the same gear as you used with leaded process equipment maintenance [even though it may not be necessary] just to be conservative.

Dave,

Good advice and point well taken. Do you use a private service or your local Labor and Industries folks for monitoring?

Thanks.
