Beyond the materials cost, one approach to estimating the cost of assembling a board is: 1 Direct cost * Determine the processes required to assemble the board * Separate parts on BOM according to process * Multiply number of parts in each process by the standard cost of that process * Sum the part - process standard products for the BOM 2 Indirect cost * Load manufacturing and SG&A overhead * Load profit margin

Thanks do we have any software for measuring the standard cost for assembling a board according to the processes that it needs?

Not sure what software you have, but somehow you must be accumulating costs by process and you probably know [or can figure-out] how many boards you processed. From this, you can calculate a standard cost of a process.

Continuing, there is a thread, posted this week [or worst case last week], requesting information on time standards for manual operations. Look here: http://www.smtnet.com/Forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=1&Message_ID=55692

There is 3part on the cost: 1. PCB cost 2.Assembly cost 3.components cost.

If you would like, please send the file and the BOM to me for quote. Thank you

Hi davef,

couple of questions:

clarifying costing of direct labor against overhead cost:

an operator loading PCB onto the reflow oven is a direct cost, how about the reflow process time of the PCB while travelling inside the reflow, is that an overhead cost?

another angle:

say I have auto pcb bd loader, paste printer, p&p machine. my operator loads the pcb's onto the autoloader, this is direct labor cost. But the PCB automatically travels onto the paste printer and being printed then to p&p machine for population, are these considered overhead cost in the calculation? then my operator inspects each PCB prior to reflow is again direct labor cost. PCB travels through the reflow then into an automatic PCB unloader are again considered as overhead cost? just confused.

thanks davef in advance...

some examples of overhead: Rent Electricity Some Indirect Labor ..... anything required keep the door open (not customer related)

You can assess these costs anyway that makes sense to you. These machinery costs are 'direct' to the product. You could call them manufacturing overhead or machine cost. It all depends on what makes sense. As an example, depending on the products you manufacture, you may not want to assign SMT machinery costs to products that use only PTH process amchinery.
