Newb needs to bake some chips help..... | 21 July, 2008

Hey guys. I'm a newb and was thrown in to this project. The company I work for opened some spools of chip they have and it says on a sticker, "BAKE if PINK" and it is pink. Is this something we can do onsite? I have researched it and it says bake a 50c. Could I rig an oven to dry them out enough? If co can I leave them in the spools?

If not who could I call to get this done for a reasonable price?

Thanks for anyhelp you guys could give me.

We blab about component baking all the time. Search the fine SMTnet Archives for more, like: http://www.smtnet.com/forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=1&Message_ID=52970

Here is good background materal on MSD: http://www.smta.org/msd/msd.cfm

OK I have read though all the treads and learned more. One more question if someone can answer it. Can I do this myself on site? We have a Vitronics Soltec XPM820 Reflow Oven. Or do I need a super special oven for component baking..

Thanks max

Q1. Can I do this myself on site? A1. Sure. Most companies demoisturate their components in-house. Q2. Can we use our Vitronics Soltec XPM820 Reflow Oven? A2. You can. Most of us would be using an oven like that in our product processing. If you look at IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033B October 2005, Handling, Packing, Shipping and Use of Moisture/Reflow Sensitive Surface Mount Devices, Tables 4-1, 4-2 and 4-3; you'll see that demoisturation can require substantial machine time. Q3. Do I need a super special oven for component baking? A3. No. Buy a used Blue M oven or similar type. They are not expensive at all.

Now, be careful. Recall the parts of the background discussion that discuss the maximum bake temperature of reels and trays.

FYI If you are talking about resistors or capacitors or any inexpensive part for that matter, throw them away and buy more. You will have to bake them forever and they are only worth a couple of bucks. You've already spent more money than they are worth talking about it.
