It's prudent to rattle on about proper hygene and safe handling to remind our troop that they need to be careful not to take-on lead through hand-to-mouth action. What steps do you take to assure that your troop are not taking on lead as an unintended after effect of working in your plant?

We go RoHS.

I learned in a seminar that one can ingest Bismuth and not die.

Rub a potato on your skin. It's supposed to absorb the lead (well on this site it does! LOL).

Last year I had my doctor do a lead test during one of my regular blood tests. My exposure at work is similar to most of you, I'm sure. I've been doing this for 13 years now. We do predominantly leaded solder processing through SMT and wave. I wash my hands often, and use good common sense as far as hand-to-mouth exposure. In addition, I consider myself an avid shooter. I reload my own shotgun shells and shoot A LOT. Therefore my exposure to lead at work, as well as at play is greater than most. I was very pleased to see my blood lead level to be near the low end of normal for someone my age (38 years old). I know that doesn't answer you initial question, and I'm sad to say we really don't have any official practices in house to avoid exposure.

Lead cannot be penetrate your body through your skin by just touching it. You have to swallow it. It does not promote cancer or cause you to go steril like the rumors at my plce of work talk about. Although it is fun to touch people you dislike with a bar of solder and watch them panic. Do some research - inform your troops - provide them with an MSDS station.

Not sure what breathing it in will cause. Saw this in Mexico where they were blowing solder for solder paste. Appeared that the people inside this work area wore very little to filter the air they were breathing.

There are two approaches I have seen at different sites that seem to work. The first one is for them to use gloves. When I asked as to why, they told me there are studies that showed people wearing gloves are less likely to put them in their mouth and therefore less chances of oral contamination. Don't know if true, but seems to make sense. The second one is probably more complex to do, as it involves educating people in the dangers of lead poisoning and as there are many myths out there, it will be harder. But basically, explaining that lead can only be absorbed through the mouth or by breathing it. They need to wash their hands before meals or drinks and you will have a hard time explaining that working with soldering irons, ovens, etc. does not expose lead airborne particles and that the smoke they see is flux and other chemicals but not lead. Good luck!

Guys!

Its very interesting question to know about whether our blood polluted with lead or not.

what i read is that lead is the maximum dense metal, it mean that it could not be digestible.

We now a days, living in the maximum polluted senerio where we covered up with the pollution and waves.

We should have regular health checkups and blood checkups!

We should just let our local governments ban our blood. Case closed.
