Is it common to check your reflow ovens proper operation with a separate system ? We check our ovens weekly with a DataPaq Surveyor.

In 10 or so years of Data collection, I have never witnessed this weekly test prove anything of significance.

I mean the ovens have belt speed alarms and zone temp alarms...right ?

I used to just follow up profile development with a single pass with a MOLE, one thermocouple in air. I'd keep that profile as a baseline, and have the operators run the MOLE through prior to production and compare the results to the baseline. I found a failed blower once doing this. The oven had found a way to compensate for it with heaters running at about 75%. Of course, YMMV.

Once a week seems a little to often in my oppinion, we do it every 3 month. As i se it we do it just to make sure that the sensors and other messuring equipment are showing us the truth and not beginn to drift away. We also have some customers that really like to check that we do this type of test regulary. If you run lead free the process window is smaller then before and this is a way to prove that your process is stable.

We used to do this, but we dont any more. Never found something with the Mole. We have had 2 blowers come to a halt due to stuck bearings, but that was easely spotted without a check. (Temperature alarm and Huge whining noise)

I agree, I have been doing this for years also. Never found anything that the oven wasn't already telling me. I will however be investing in the KIC 24/7 constant monitoring device soon. Price isn't too bad for what you get. Customers like to get a warm fuzzy one knowing youre constantly monitoring the process. Whatever that means.... haha
