Hello

Does anybody know any standard about SMD nomenclature? I mean any document saying about package type, shape definition saying that 0402 its exaclty .... Because I found some kind of documents at Top Line site, maybe u can share at forum with this kind of standard. I m looking for something from official organization like IPC or EIA maybe you guys have experience in this field and know good websites or proper path where coudl I find it. Thanks in advance

Piotr,

Are you talking about Dummy Class 101 from Topline? I found this to be very helpful for beginners. http://www.topline.tv/DummyClass101.pdf

Yea. I think that http://www.topline.tv/SMDnomen.pdf is even better. But the problem is that these two files was done in 1998 and from that time 0402 its not a prototype anymore its a standard. I would like to have this kind of document but more current version. And I was wondering if IPC or EIA or any other standards, or maybe some others components suppliers has this kind of document.

Anyway thanks for ur input

Hi piotr

You have a pretty good start. Continue with IPC-SM-782 and IPC-A-610.

Try checking IPC.org and search for IPC-DRM-18G. This book has a lot of info that may help you.

While a bit dated, here is a convient starting point: http://www.smtinline.com/html-en/sumofstandards.html

FYI:

IPC-SM-782 has been superseded by IPC-7351A, IPC-SM-782 land patterns previously found under the "Manufacturer Part Number" database portion of SM-782 Land Pattern Calculator are no longer maintained by IPC.

Let me just shortly explain why do I open this thread. In my corporation in different plants we use same components at the same machines in different products(Fuji machines). I would like to create kind of global database of shapes ( its in FujiFlexa) available for entire corporation. Then when I have problem with one component I can compare it with other plants where they use same shapes. The problem is that when Im checking for example: we are using Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors with height 5.3 mm. We use for him name ELEC5.3 it can be not the same for 2 plants because we are use different convenction and for 2 plants it can be not the same component. I was just curious if there is any standard nomenclature name for all kind of components which gives clear rule how to naming all components. It would be easier to manage such database where everybody is using nomenclature from one standard.

There is no standard for what you're trying to accomplish. We recall a similar thread on SMTnet. In it, a poster suggested: "Call them: 1206T.5, 1206T1.0, SOIC16, RESNET16, SOIC16T5.0, ALCAP4, ALCAP5 etc., where: T means thickness but for the ALCAP case 4 means 4mm diameter. ..." Hi Piotr,

We had the same problem before. Each engineer created his own name and after while nobady knows what it is. We started to use our own coding system of components using special code matrix. We use main features of componets like body shape, dimensions, leads shape, pitchs, etc to describe component. So you got code H23E45 where each character represents one features.

It resolved our problem with making duplicat vision files for machines.

I did my directory by using the Fuji Part Data Directory. You can request one through Fuji and have a copy for all programmers. For instance a 3216 resistor is named RECT3216060 or your electrolytic caps ALEC4343540. Hopefully that is what you are asking for.
