Our 1989 Fuji IP1 seems to have developed a personality.

The most recent behavior change is that it now stops occasionally and takes a short "break". This happens just before the nozzle Z axis goes down - just before picking a part or just before placing the part.

The IP-1 will stop and "think" about lowering the nozzle for anywhere between 1 and 5 seconds, then go on as though nothing has happened.

Sometimes it will run for 15 minutes without a hick-up then take a break once or sometimes several times in succession.

Has anyone every seen this behavior? Do you Fuji IP-1 users know where I should start looking?

Hi Pete,

I was using only the small and medium nozzles but it happens on both nozzles. No error message unless the delay went past about 5 seconds then a Q servo error and machine stops. Pressing reset and run enables it to continue although it then rejects that one part (if it had one on the nozzle and the delay was at placement, not on pick part).

Hi,

Yes, the Q axis rotates easily both manually and with the use of the inching keys. What's interesting is that the hesitation occurs even if the Q-axis is pre-rotated before picking up the part so I don't think the Q-axis is actually being called upon to rotate some of the time that the hesitation occurs.

I'll start keeping a detailed log of what part and where in the production cycle this occurs. This may take a week or so before I have any more details.

Latest information: The IP-1 packed up completely this week showing an assortment of weird error messages. The CPU was still running but the +24VDC power supply LED was off and nothing would work (emergency stop mode always enabled). Pulling the +24VDC switch mode power supply was an interesting knuckle damaging experience. An electrolytic capacitor on the +24V output failed and replacing that capacitor resurrected the IP-1 and allowed it to continue working.

The hesitation problem still exists but only very randomly about once every 50 placements. Once in a great while the IP-1 will hesitate twice in a row, pausing for 2-3 seconds then continuing on like nothing ever happened. This machine is 18 years old. Do machines get Alzheimer's or can we just continue to replace body parts?

I have to admit that I'm impressed with this piece of ancient Fuji gear.

Hi Bert ,

I dont know much about IP , since I partnered our Fuji CP 6 with Siemens .At any rate, can you check your flat ribbon cable of your Ip's Head. I assume there one wire that is nearly breaking. During movement, head servo controller experience signal surges,which makes the head stops for a while .The busted capacitor indicates a current /voltage surges.

As mentioned your machine is 1989 model, your machine is 18 years it is about time replacing the cables. Just my 2 cents.
