ca anyone help i need to design a circuit which can deliver 18v from 24v the problem is that the "extra" 6v i dont just wanna lose as heat/or lost energy as I have a limited power supply

is there an effective way to do this - i have basic electronic skills putting boards together etc , but not much of a theoretical understanding

On going from 24v to 18v, try: * Voltage regulator * Resistor divider * Transformer

On not generating heat or loosing energy, the laws of physics already are pretty well fixed.

Hi Dave,

A switching regulator is probably your best bet for efficency - Power Integrations are very good in this arena (www.powerint.com) and have lots of applications support available (Circuit diagrams, engineers etc.). Also ST Microelectronics (www.st.com), National Semiconductor (www.natsemi.com).

A switching regulator should give you upwards of 85% efficiency. National Semiconductors 'Simple Switchers' are pretty good, and they have some good design tools on their site.
