MCS 16F hard disk maintenance for Fuji IP1 | 16 December, 2006

We've been using the MCS-16F computer with a Fuji IP-1 for about 9 months and wonder what the "Hard Disk Maintenance" feature does. We have no documentation on this feature.

I'm at home right now but remember that the MCS-16F boots up saying V2.3.

The IP-1 is a 1986 machine but the MCS-16F was purchased used as a replacement to one that didn't work. The vintage is unknown.

Tomorrow is Monay and I'll see if there is any date information on the PC.

Hi, If I remember correctly (it has been about 15 years since i worked with one of these.)The old MCS machine is based upon a Motorola 6800/68000-series Micro processor and the operating system is OS/9 from Microware Systems Corporation. This was a rather good OS-system of it's time, capable of real-time, multiuser and multitasking. However, the application s/w from Fuji (I am not sure that Fuji originally even wrote the s/w) was not. If this is the case, then you are running this system on a very old harddisk, perhaps a MFM hd. If so, it could be very hard to track down a new hd in case of failure. Question: did you recieve all the s/w and I assume it is on 5,25" floppy diskettes?

I would strongly recommend that you to completlty stay out of any "Disk Maintenance" as this can make your disk not to function properly afterwords, unless you have all the neccesary, fully working installations disk + backup of the machines proper data + all the programs you have been made.

The todays computers with the "so called" state of the art disk management s/w isn't bullet proof in any way... I will try to find out more info for you of the system of yours and post it if I am succesful. Perhaps others will correct me if I am completle out bicycling. (A Swedish sentence for someone who doesn't know what they are talking about). My English is not so good, but I hope you will understand. /
