Does anyone know if it is legal to not sell parts to a customer without paying a $1,500 registration fee? I can understand if I needed technical support. I am referring to Austin American. We sell refurbished equipment & I needed a few parts & a manual, they will sell me these parts + the cost of the registration fee. Any input would be appreciated.

I have run into this problem with used equipment that I purchased. Many times I have been unable to buy parts for used equipment. The manufacturer wants to charge some inspection and upgrade fee prior to supporting a used piece of equipment with service or parts. For $1500.00 dollars you should get something other than registration. Ultimately if they don't want to sell to you they don't have to sell to you.

I have dealt with many companies and never had this problem. I would think if you talked nice to the right person, they would make an exception. Maybe if you called every day they would give in.

I don't know if it's legal, but I do know that other companies are doing the same thing. I have a couple of semi-auto printers that I actually sold my current company from my last company. Called 'em up a few months ago to order some parts and they wanted $1500 to register first.

I guess if they don't want my money I can't force it on 'em, but it seems pointless to me and frankly I don't see any reason to operate that way other than out of spite. Lowlifes in my book, and their status in the industry backs that up, imnsho.

I know for a fact that DEK will charge you $3,500 a year if you want parts and/or phone support for a used printer that you bought on the open market. Electrovert wants $5,000 per machine for any support for used equipment purchased from the open market...

I seem to be able to buy parts from electgrovert without the "fee" and yes it is used equipment and was not purchased through electrovert.

It would be nice to list all these MFGrs that require you to pay them to order parts. I can understand the tech support thing to some extent but not selling parts.

"I can understand the tech support thing to some extent..."

Absolutely.

"...but not selling parts." Bingo.

As far as I can see it costs them money, so why would they do it? I find it hard to believe it's spite, but that's about all I can come up with. I also find it hard to believe that THEY believe I'd rather buy a new machine from them just to be able to order parts. For my application it's cheaper to have the parts fabbed than to order from them. The machine isn't that complex.
