I have just been engaged again in SMT pick-n-place machines. My latest exposure is with Yamaha YV100 and YM84. I have been having some problem on feeders, especially on 1206 reel packages and above. The plastic cover on the reel does not peel off easilly causing machine stops due to parts pick-up failure. Tried swapping it with other reels and turns OK. While feeder problem will be addressed, are there important factors to be considered on feeder designs to make sure tape peels off from the reel everytime? Things like "pull test" requirements from the parts supplier, or something like a gap to be maintained on the feeder heads...? Or is there somebody who could guide me on feeder design consideration for efficient tape peeling from its reel? Thanks.

Hi Dexter,

Your problem may not be with the feeder itself but with the quality of the tape you are receiving. OX3 Corporation performs a peel test on every single line item that is processed through its facility. You may want to check with your current semiconductor supplier to see who is doing its taping.

yes, sounds more like you are having a peel force problem. suggest you look at buying a tester to make sure you are being supplied quality reels, as said above.

I assume that you are referring to the same kind of mechanical feeders (older type) that are used on the Philips (Assembl�on) Topaz as well. First make sure that the right gear pulley spring is set to its stiffest position (the loop at the end of the spring is hooked to the upper pin on the feeder body). Also check that the distance between the feeder top cover and the housing is not greater than 0.1 mm. The gear pulley mechanism could be dirty. Dismantle the gear pulley mechanism and remove all old oil and debris from the shafts and all the other moving parts.

Oh, and on our older 8mm feeders at least the cast metal part of the feeder body tends to work itself loose from the sheet metal part of the body as they only are kept together by three screws. The screws tend to get loose with the effect that the air cylinder stroke is not completely transmitted to the tape feed sprockets because of excessive play between the feeder body parts which causes all kinds of feeding problems.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to clean this feeders. They all seem to be worn out and needs cleaning and adjustments. Peel tester could be another way for us of making sure our system goes more efficiently. This peeling problem usually occurs on big component or reels. So this could be valid. Hope that cleaning helps. Mind you, the mechanical feeders are only rated for 4 million operations and some components need replacing after 2 million operations. You need to think carefully whether it is worth your while to try to resuscitate your old feeders or rather replace them with less worn-out equipment.

BTW, I have the CSM FV/GEM feeder manual as a PDF file if you are interested.

Speaking of peel force measurement, how do we know the right peel force for the reel to work effectively ?

Is there a way to determine the right adhesiveness of the tape with the reel?
