Hi all,

We are starting to see more and more 0402 components on BOMs of late.

We have a small quantity of feeders at the moment which are 8x2 paper. Any 0402 components we have placed have been on these feeders. I noticed that you can get embossed feeders also, my question is Are there 0402 components that need an embossed feeder?

Don't know if they "needed" embossed or not but....... I get an LED that is 0402 on embossed but, it is also at 4mm pitch as well.

I have seen 0402 inductors that look identical to 0402 caps, come in embossed reels, but the pitch on the tape was 4mm. Im not saying they dont exist, but i have never seen an 0402 component come in an embossed tape with a pitch of 2mm. everything i have seen with a pitch of 2mm was paper.

Yes 0402 8X4 embossed feeders exist for Panasonic MSR, Universal GSM, Contact Systems, and Mimot for sure. In the old days of 0402 components, 0402 resistors used to come in 8X4 paper tape but now I think most 0402 resistors and capacitors come in 8X2 paper tape. There are LEDs and other components that come in embossed plastic tape. Those capacitor and resistors manufacturers that like to package using PSA (sticky) cover tape will use embossed plastic tape. The plastic tape is sloppy around the 0402 component. I like the punched paper tape for 0402 components even though it is dirty. I like dirty over sticky and sloppy.

Hi AJ,

Just had a look though our parent company's stock on components, and even the smallest of diodes & transistors (such as DFN1006-2 package - roughly 0402)come on 8x4 plastic. All of the 8x2 pitch tapes are paper (EIA: 01005, 0201, 0402; JIS: 0402, 0603, 1005). It's not totally comprehensive, but it covers around 70 component manufacturers.

Also we never used/needed 8x2 plastic for our CP's.
