ROHS compliant marking Ink | 15 June, 2006

Hello All

Has anybody used or know of ROHS compliant marking Ink? In particular the permanent ink (bought in little container and used on the felt stamp pads)that QC inspectors use to stamp off a PCB after inspection.

We use a trodat industrial ink 1250 (Black) or sanford roll on ink. I am unable to find any info that these permanent inks are ROHS compliant. No where on the web sites or info provided by the ink manf. does it state the ink is ROHS compliant

Untill i find out if the ink is ROHS compliant, the QC manager will not let the inspectors stamp off any of the lead free builds.

Thanks for any help solving another ROHS mystery.

Yes there is RoHS certified ink it just cost twice as much as the regular ink. Just kidding Some people ask for RoHaaS compliance on cardboard boxes, pencils etc. What a mess $%^$ To answer your question, Ink is made from ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and dye non of those two are EUROPEAN banned substances. (if they ever ban ethanol they all have to drive a bike instead of their car) The ink suppliers are not responding because I think they get sick and tired of the RoHaaS monster.

I have to make a correction to my previous post There are specialized inks with cadmium pigment The easiest way to find out is to get an MSDS from your supplier and check for the presence of cadmium (which is a banned substance under the EU RoHS directive)

Thanks for your help.

Looked for an MSDS on the ink but could not find one. All this ink was ordered long before my time.

I will try to contact ink vendor again.

Are you applying the ink onto the electronic assembly itself? if not then it doesnt have to be compliant.

We buy the old standard Aero Brand #1250 stamp pad ink in Black from Menke with a RoHS cert. No extra cost.
