We have recently started building assemblies containing 0402 components (argggg!!). Were using the TM8FC magazines and are seeing alot of miss-picks on the 0402 components. When the feeder advances the part, the part can; jump out of the tape, or turn up on there sides or even flip upside down, all before the tool goes to pick the part. It appears to me that these TM8FC's are not designed for the small lite 0402 parts. Has anyone out there run into these issues? Any fix for it?

Mydata does not make these magazines anymore. (I think I know why, they appear not to work with a sheeite, but I could be wrong).

Anyway, MyData reports that there Linear Magazines work much better (less miss-picks) for 0603 and below sized components.

Any one out there using the Linear Magazines for 0402 components? How are they performing for you?

Good Morning Paul,

We are using the linear magazines as well as the old style and are processing 0402 and 0201's. I do have to say that the Agilis magazines work much better for smaller parts. Just make sure that you have the correct size clip for that particular component. There is some overlap on the component size for each size clip but the carrier and cover tape do play a role in selecting the right one. For 0402's, you probably need the white clip. We did do our DOE with 0201's with the TM8FC magazines. Have you tried adjusting the component separator clip? We had to make small adjustments on these to get a consistant pick. If they are bent at all, replace them.

You should be able to process these parts with that magazine but may have to do some tweaking to get it running smooth. Also, make sure the timing of the magazine is set correctly.

Thanks for the info Chris, I'll check into your suggestions. We seem to be having the problem with all/most of the TM8FC magazines. I'm looking for a common denominator.

Has any one ever experienced static electricity on the cover tape causing the chip components to stick to the cover tape and exhibit the above symptoms? I think I remember that topic being discussed here on this forum, but I can't seem to locate it.

My company also uses the TM8C (all feeders) with the same problem as Paul. The 0402's do exactly the same as he desribes.The SMT operators are correcting the placement data all the time when using 0402 but to no avail.

What do you mean by the white clips? Is this the component separator clip (thesed clips are silver)? We replace any bent component separator clips but still have advancement and pick up up problems for 0402's.

Another question is how to make sure the timimg of the magazine is set correctly. How is this process done to the TM8C feeders.

Do you have a login for the support section on the Mydata website ? If not, get one. Click on MYtech, then click the article named: "Simple feeder care reduces reject rate! The component separator spring"

We run alot of 0402's on the TM8FC mags with very little problems. BUT...you do have to make sure they are in perfect adjustment. Also make sure that you do not have the wrong component seperator springs on your mags. The ones for a regular TM8 are different.

The white clip that I refer to is for the Agilis feeder system. The actual clips (feeders) are color coded. As far as the timing on the TM8's, I received a proceedure from Mydata several years ago but had reverted to submitting the feeder back to Mydata for refurb. They did the timing as part of the refurb. I would not recommend this for standard 8mm feeders but the FP's are more critical and they worked perfectly when we got them back.

Thanks for popping in. Your MyData advice has always been good. Anyway, all of our TM8FC's do have the correct seperators. So nix that. I thought the timing only had to do with advancing and stopping the component into the pick line correctly? I emailed MyData for a user name and password to get into there MyTech page, no response yet. Do you happen to have a copy of that Mydata document you refered to, that you could send me via my email address?

Friggen 0402's, I dislike them..........

I don't know about the TM8FC magazines but the Agilis magazines allow you to slow down the tape advancement speed. If you can, slow down the tape advancement on the TM8FC.

The recommended feeder for 0402s and especially 0201s is the green feeder with a 3.7mm spec. We use greens for 0402/0201, white for 0603, yellow for 0805s, and reds for tantalums. They work well, but sometimes you seem to get difficult tape. I have had success adjusting the feeder speed with My series machines to get those parts with jumpin' worms in 'em to cooperate. The feeders should all be grounded via the machine to minimize/eliminate static charge? I'm not overly familiar with the TP series, so if I seem lofty with our My9, please forgive me.
