Have a problem with Omniflo 5 (-97 vintage) pin chain conveyor.

Occasionally the conveyor stops for a second or two, then makes a slight jerk, then stops again, makes a jerk etc. Then suddenly the problem goes away only to return next day (we switch the oven off for the night). This phenomenon occurs only randomly and just as randomly goes away.

The pin chain is lubricated and runs smoothly. I have a spare motor handy that I installed in the oven but it was of no help. Encoder or the speed control board? I do not relish the idea of purchasing expensive spare parts at random. Anybody with similar problems?

I've never had this problem on an Omniflo oven, but have seen it on others. It has always turned out to be mechanical. A bearing going bad or FOD in the rails. I would pull the chains and carefully check each link of both chains, all of the bearings in the conveyor system including the drive. Clean both rails and check for debris. Jerry

AR Sounds like dirty chains... couple ways to check... Pull off the drive chain for the conveyor. Place a wrench on the (unload end) drive shaft and spin, if it is a bit tough.. dirty rails. Also look at load end of chains. The chain goes low and wraps around a bearing with pull down springs keeping tension, if the rails/chains are dirty the chain will pull up on the springs and then "jerk" the chain since enough tension was applied to move chain through the rail.

To clean chains.... - remove, soak in solvent or cleaner for a couple hours. - Agitate to clean or use brush for really direty chains. - Pull out of solvent, drip dry, then soak in oil for a couple hours, shake the chains to get rid of air pockets. Do not use conventional oil, it wil just gum up the chains at reflow temps. drip dry the chains of oil over cardboard, wile any excess if needed. - CLEAN the rails, ver improtant, use cleaner or solvent to clean out the chain guides in the rails with a rag. - replace the chain, check for kinks or twist in the chain. thanks marc

We just went through this exact same problem on an OmniFlo. We did all the stuff Marc talks about and the problem went away completely. As Marc states, clean the chain guides! You will will see lots of junk near the last zones(s).

jdengler may be right. Had a 10 zone do the same thing. It was a couple links in the chain.

We had the exact same problem on our OMNI 10. We found that two of the rails the pin chain rides in were warped. Somehow at one point our PC lost communication with the oven and the heaters went wide open for several minutes...this is what caused the warpage. They had to be replaced.

Also, as others have said on this thread...it is important to keep the rails and the chains clean.

We had the problem for a year, and cleaned everything. We replaced the DART-control unit, and have not seen the problem since

I agree that it's the probably the chain. The links get dirty and can bind up over time. When you pull the chain, check to see that each link rotatates freely with its adjacent link. I bet you'll find one or more links that are binding. This is the simplest and most likely cause of the problem. The rail guides are also probably dirty, and that could be the root cause of the chain binding in the first place. When you pull the chain, be sure to clean the guides, that will keep the chain from gunking up and binding sooner.

We gave the chains a nice bath first in solvent and then in oil. We scrubbed the rails as clean as we could but it did not help. The chains run perfectly smoothly in their grooves and with hardly no resistance at all when I rotate the drive shaft by hand. I begin to suspect that you are right, it must be the speed control unit SC-1 because the problem goes away after an hour and a half, I suppose after the control unit has warmed up sufficiently. Furthermore, at a higher speed (>100 cm/min) the motor runs without complaint. Too bad we run the conveyor as slowly as 10 cm/min... I'll try replacing the control board next when I get my hands on one.

Hi AR

Nice job on the chain/rail cleaning. I would contact Speedline Electrovert tech support, 800.737.8110 to assist in trouble shooting. They can walk you through using a meter to measure input and output current to the SC card and make sure that is the issue.

thanks marc

Hi all,

What is the best oil to lubricate the chain ?

Up till now we have been using the Tribol 930 but it is practically impossible to obtain here in Europe at least. Speedline is extremely reluctant to sell it for some reason that I cannot figure out. Currently we are testing Anderol XL 220 but it is too early days yet to say anything definitive about it.

Soltec prescribes Turmofluid 40b. Seems to work ok.

The only problem with the Tribol is PB Free profiles. At thses temps, the Tribol smokes and stinks bad.

It also has a tendancy to carbonize. I find myself having to use easy off to clean the chains.

Tribol 1430 is the latest generation oil, 930 can't take lead free temps. Please see the following link.... http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=82958955&contentId=6004371

If your getting alot smoke and residue, reduce the amount of oil. Only a light coating on the chain rollers is needed. Over oiling of any type oil will cause fumes and gum up the system very quickly. thanks

Had similar issue with Omniflow. Was actually jostling tall electrolytic caps off of pads. Found that idler sprockets/pulleys needed lubed.

All's well that end's well: I replaced the Dart speed controller card and the problem disappeared completely. But no harm in giving the chains and the rails a thorough scrub although they weren't the culprit in this case.

Many thanks to everyone for their input int this issue.
