Lead Free Solder Wick

Is "Lead Free" solder wick really any different than regular solder wick? It's only copper infused with flux so I don't see what the difference would be. I see in the catalogs that the LF wick costs more than the regular wick. Do I need to use LF on my LF assemblies or can I save some money by using regular wick?

Brad;

I think the only difference is the color of the packaging that it comes in. We use the same type solder wick on both lead and lead free solder with no problems. We just paint or color the packaging green for the lead free solder wick to keep them separate. Hope this helps.

Just guessing here because I haven't researched it and we're not lead free yet, but wouldn't you want a flux chemistry that's optimized for higher iron temps for lead free use?

Don't forget to buy the "Lead free heelstraps, smocks, wriststraps, hairnets and repair table" too. They cost twice as much, but you have to have them!

We use regular wick and it works well with the LF solder. Vendor even ageed there was no need to change. Unless we bought the lead free heelstraps, smocks, wriststraps, hairnets and repair table fro hi too!

Steve;

This is true if you want to use the solder wick that comes with the flux in it. We use no flux added solder wick. We use our normal flux then when we remove solder.

Good one chunks!!

Great way of proving a point With lead-free, engineers walk on thin ice and sales people are in heaven. If a flux can't handle an increase of 30C it wasn't a good flux to begin with.

It was the lead free placement machines that really got us!

It's a lead free X-ray machine that would bother me the most.

It goes to show, EVERYONE (Equipment OEM's, solder paste, flux, wick, etc) is benefitting from this Lead-Free legislation.

It's even created jobs in the US, and has taught many a Process Engineer the basics of soldering and profiling.

Since that LF debacle is doomed for disaster anyway I wouldn't be surprised to see one on the market soon. Wouldn't that be something??

Samir, I like your sense of humor, what is the origin?

Patrick,

My sardonic wit comes from 11 years of being an embattled process guy whos basically seen it all in electronics manufacturing. Ive been witness to the Seagull Managers, uneducated managers lacking credentials, managers with MBAs but couldnt find their way out of a paper bag, the new Director or CEO from a totally different industry but he got hired because of being tall with nice hair and glasses, and desk jockey Engineers with the title manufacturing or process to their name, but yet have never touched equipment, solder paste or flux, and so-called Quality Engineers who make a living of pointing out defects and process problems. They do their victory dance when they find defects God forbid ONE defect occur on an assembly with 40,000 opportunities and then read Circuits Assembly and SMT Magazine and use the latest buzzwords like RoHS, dendritic growth and tin whiskers, who then theorize that the complanirity problem on your QFP160 is a result of dendritic growth caused by a tin whisker on a lead that wasnt RoHS compliant. Then they generate charts and graphs of the defects, point out the obvious, and then ask yours truly, the process guy with a clue what are ya gonna do about it? The CEO from the food industry without a clue finds out about the defect, panics, and yells at the Seagull Manger, who then over-reacts, calls a meeting with a cross functional Tiger Team, and asks everybody in the room, How can we leverage our synergies to achieve our mission critical goal of Total Quality Management of our value-added processes (and you gotta pronounce itprocess-SEEZ). Basically all the type of people I mention above lack common sense. I met a guy from America who called these type of people the 90%ers, the theory being that only 10% of mankind has common sense.

These same non-common sense types are the ones who came up with this Lead-Free legislation, and for those who are knowledgeable, we all know that electronics waste comprises only what. 0.5% of the total lead waste in our landfills..but I must admit, its created jobs, financially benefited the equipment and material companies, and achieved a new breed of engineers on the fast track to management who never even knew how to troubleshoot regular Sn-Pb assemblies whichve been around for decades! Ive taken a few of these Lead-Free seminars and was amazed that some people havent even passed Process Enineering 101.

So yes, thats a source of humor to me. Thanks for the complement though!

You're living a Dilbert cartoon! Thanks for giving me a Friday laugh...knowing that I'm not the only one dealing with some of these challenges - although it sounds like you got more than your fair share of them.
