I failed in a Soldering interview.My recruiter send me for PTH wave soldering. The company given me a small board and asked me to take out rectangular prismatic shape PTH components,I tried to put two guns around solder bonds one by one alongwith flux cleaning fluid but I was unable to break solder bond.This was my first experience with soldering. I checked names of soldering stations were: PACE0635 HANKO And temperatures knobs were set extremely high. Now I want to know why I failed to take out small prismatic components?Can anyone explain?

I'm confused on nozzle rods as a description. Thru-hole desoldering is achieved by fluxing the the leads that are on the bottom side of the board and then coming in with a desoldering gun. You place the tip/nozzle of the gun against the side of the lead and watch the solder melt then come completely over the lead and depress the suction on the gun this will vacuum the solder thru the pth. Wiggle the nozzle of the gun against the lead until you feel it move freely. You have now accomplished the desoldering of the pth. Move on to each and every lead this way. Also since you have pre-fluxed the leads prior to desoldering, there is going to be flux fumes, get yourself a fan or fume extractor try not to breath the fumes. They are nasty.

Yeh,u catch my fault.Thanks Is it called Wave Soldering?how and why this name? I did'nt differentiate b/w two rods and in panic may tried wrong sequence of events.Word "wiggle" meaning is to proceed with or as if with twisting and turning movements as seen in AOL dictionary. Can u elaborate this :Depress the suction on the gun

Or you can use the Hot Air (Hakko) to remove that component and a tweezer to pull it. dont pull it just yet. If you see the solder melting then feel the component using the tweezer by wiggling it a bit and if you can wiggle it only then you can pull it off. Dont pull it off too hard because the pcb pad might also be removed from the pcb following the components feet.... P.S. 1. You should watch out for other components on the board that might get affected with the Hot Air, neighboring components might melt or burn, Try putting covers on the weak neighboring components. 2. Make sure your using the right temperature setting select Air=2 to 3 and Temperature= 4. 3. Use ESD Gloves and Strap. 4. Concentrate on the component and smile at the interviewer

Thagalain, You really need to take a formal soldering and rework class along with some component I.D. You cannot expect to be able to succesfully rework PCBAs without the basic knowledge and understanding of flux, heat, techniques and the various equipment required/available to perform the individual task.

On another question you had- Wave soldering is a process that uses a machine to solder components to a PCBA without any operators soldering these components. basically a wave operator loads boards onto the conveyor and the machine does the rest. You did not interview for wave soldering but as a rework operator.
