Splicing SMT tape & reel

I'm wondering what others are doing with splicing SMT carrier tapes when necessary. (e.g to join cut tapes etc) The system we have seems kind of clumsy and when a tape is spliced, often causes jams in the feeder anyway.

Any systems or advice you can recommend? Thanks

According to inquiries of splicing tape, it is been done at many places. I do agree that the feeder fouls badly, if the splice brakes. How much longer does it take to fix the problem with a broken splice? How quickly can you change a feeder/tape without splice. Most likely, even when 1 out of 5 splices brake you save time. At $ 0,10 - $ 0.20 per splice youll require a better splicing ratio to save money. Try some other splicing tape. The Tesa-Steier tape doesnt require a bulky tool http://www.fritschusa.com/tapesplicingpage.htm

The root cause of your problem is your placement equipment. It is not designed for continuous production during component replenishment. Feeders that can be removed, reloaded, and placed back on the machine while the machine is running (without missing a beat) is the end all solution. Everything else is a work around. CONTACT me if you want details of machines that are capable of this.

We tried splicing and found numerous problems with jamming. To make a long story short, as a rule we just don't do it. There are exceptions such as; we are short a part and need to use several very short pieces of tape and reel parts.
